Young People and Homelessness

As we are aware that homelessness has many forms and faces this Spotlight for H-UTheatre is Young people facing homelessness. Many young people face homelessness for a number of different reasons; Family problems, violence or abuse, Lack of space, fear of safety or simply because they cannot cope in their environment. Within HU-Theatre we have been looking at the organisations that help support young people facing homelessness and how they are part of the solution to this ever growing issue. As a company we have been in contact with Safe and Sound Homes (SASH) : click here to view their site https://www.sash-uk.org.uk/ who spoke to us about how they were fore filling their mission statement of “Preventing Youth Homelessness together”. Organisation like SASH have put in place a night stops and Supported lodgings system where a Host would give accommodation to a young person for either a single night or a longer period of time, provided that the young person agrees and complies with the rules and expectations of the host. There is full information of this on their site as well as Case studies from young people who went through the process. One of the biggest support networks within the UK is called YouthUK http://www.ukyouth.org/index.html They are a large network that works together with Regional youth organisations, Social enterprises and after school clubs they have 4,890 youth organisations with the network and are currently supporting 729,694 young people to become a positive change in their lives and to give back to their community. However, a lot of youth homelessness can go undetected as particularly young people in education who sofa surf moving from place to place or living out of a car will not speak out about their situation as they try to keep up with work in order to create a better life for themselves, this is why youth homelessness is a spotlighted issue for H-UTheatre as we want to create awareness about all types of homelessness to try and create change. What do you think it would be like to be homeless at a young age? It’s difficult to be young person in modern day, with social, personal and professional pressure, they should have a place to call home!!!
