Mental Health

Undeniably, there is a massive correlation between homelessness and mental health, with mental health problems being one of the priority needs to get social housing. 'Rethink' is a voluntary organisation which helps inform people about mental health, while also helping those effected by mental health issues; on the matter of social housing and mental health, Rethink had this to say on their website: "If you are vulnerable due to your mental illness then you are classed as being in priority need, you should be offered emergency accommodation." (Click Here for more info) unfortunately, while H-UT were watching a documentary about homelessness on BBC iPlayer called 'No Place to Call Home', (Click Here to watch the Documentary) one homeless woman attempted suicide, and was in hospital for 4 days, was refused social housing even though the housing officer knew that turning this woman away to live on the streets would in-turn cause this woman to develop mental health problems, is it right for for a mentally well individual to be turned away to the streets, because they are not a 'Priority' in the guidelines of housing offices, yet when they turn people away, and force them to live on the streets, because they have no other option, to then view them as a 'Priority' when they return to the housing office for social housing after developing mental health problems, then having to go for a mental health assessment to 'prove' that they have them, which has a cost on the NHS, but with no numbers on how many homeless people use these services, there is no real figure as to how much its costing the NHS, but with the NHS debt for the financial year 20015/16 being £1.851 billion, and additional cost cannot be good news for the economy! The Department for Health had this to say on the topic: 'Health problems, in particular mental health problems, substance misuse and alcohol dependency are more prevalent among the homeless population, especially among rough sleepers with potentially significant costs for health and support services.' (Click Here for full Evidence review of the costs of homelessness  Document). With mental health problems causing so many issues on numerous services, imagine what its like living with mental heath problems? Now imagine what its like being homeless at the same time with no where to turn. MORE SOCIAL HOUSING IS NEEDED!!!
