Georgia

Simpson

Georgia Simpson, 20, is a York based Theatre practitioner, performer, writer, and facilitator, originally from Darlington, County Durham.  Throughout her degree Georgia showed interest in work that interrogates the social injustices people face; with a strong focus on gender and feminism. She believes that theatre is a great platform to help push for social and political change. Furthermore, Georgia is interested in storytelling and recognises that there are stories and voices that are not being heard; she believes that the use of theatre can help change this. Georgia also acknowledges the power of images; believing that powerful and memorable images can be emotive and spark a hunger for social change. During her time at York St John university, Georgia has had experienced working with different groups including primary school/secondary children and university students.

In the past Georgia has made work looking at the social injustices she has experienced herself (Gender inequality). Because of this she is interested in working with an area she is not directly familiar with; homelessness. She wants to look at the social injustices that she has never experienced before but has witnessed with hopes that she will become more aware of what others are going through and hopefully be able help raise awareness. Georgia recognises homeless people as a highly vulnerable group. She believes they are the most ignored and misunderstood people in our society, and wants to give them a voice. She also recognises that the issue of homelessness is a worldwide and complex problem. As a company Hand-up Theatre hope to raise awareness about homelessness and reasons for being homeless, as there are many contributing factors as to why people end up on the streets or in hostels.
